What is the Criterion Collection
If you have a spare $100 and want to buy some movies what would you spend it on? Would you take it to your local thrift store and buy a big bag full of blu rays? Would you go to Walmart and see if you run into a new Steel-book? Or, would you park your truck right in front of Barnes & Noble, march past the front desk and plant yourself right in front of the Criterion section… to buy 2 movies.
For those who don’t know, the Criterion Collection, and I quote, “is dedicated to gathering the greatest films from around the world and publishing them in DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K editions of the highest technical quality…” It’s the peak of pretension but also pretty sweet. They don’t just restore the movies from a hundred years ago that the average film school avoider hasn’t seen. They also restore things like House Party, Dazed and Confused, and How to Get Ahead in Advertising… Never seen it (but I’d like to).
They got all the great directors, well, except for this guy, this guy and this guy. But that’s probably not criterion’s fault.
These movies come packed with commentaries, making of docs, interviews, a book that you can read but never do. You definitely get a lot with these DVDs and it’s definitely worth the price… when it’s on sale.
Honestly, if it’s your favorite movie on time, paying full price is worth it. You get so much with the movie, you get to see it in the best quality possible, and you have it forever.
But, $50 for a movie you like but don’t love is just not doable.
Luckily, there’s a solution for that.
Twice a year Criterion has the 50% off sale. Which is how I got all these, I got all these on sale except for this one (Royal) I got this at goodwill.
The sale is where you maximize value, if you can get your favorite movie for 25 bucks with all the added things, it’s a no brainer. Drop a hundee, get movies you’ve never seen, movies you don’t like, who cares? Buy them all. Poppas dropping bags on movies he kinda likes, all November.
Here’s my Collection:
Fear and Loathing
Punch Drunk Love
La Haine
Sid and Nancy
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Royal Tennenbaums
Which Movies do I think Criterion should restore?
Good Time:
The Wrestler:
Caddy shack (all Rodney Dangerfield Movies):
And yeah, get weird, Restore Joe Dirt. That’d be sick, I fucking live Joe Dirt.
So yeah dude, criterion’s sick. My only request is they add some more silly movies and drop the price about 10-15% and we’ll be cooking.
